Speak a question on the phone
Use the microphone in chat mode on the iPhone to ask by speaking: tap to listen, tap again to send.
In chat mode on the iPhone there is a microphone to the left of the box. This is on the phone only: the chat on the web has no microphone.
- Open chat mode (see Open Ask Yes Chef).
- Tap the microphone. The first time, the iPhone asks whether Yes Chef may use the microphone and speech recognition. Allow both.
- The box says Listening… and the microphone becomes a stop square. Speak. Your words appear in the box as they are heard.
- Pausing does not send anything and does not stop it. Take your time.
- Tap the stop square. What was heard is sent as your question straight away.
What to know
- The tap that stops is the tap that sends. A spoken question only looks things up or sets a card up, so there is nothing to confirm at this point. Any change still waits for you to press its card’s button.
- To correct before sending, type in the box while it is listening. The words become yours to edit, and you send them with the arrow.
- If nothing was heard, the tap only stops listening.
- It listens for your team’s names, so “Amelia” and “Finn” are more likely to be heard right. It can still get a name wrong: read the card before you press it.
- It stops by itself after two minutes with nothing new heard, after five minutes in all, and when you leave the app. The words heard so far stay in the box, unsent.
If it doesn’t work
- “Microphone is off for Yes Chef”
- The microphone or speech recognition was refused for the app. On the iPhone open Settings, find Yes Chef, and switch on Microphone and Speech Recognition.
- “This phone can’t listen.”
- Speech recognition is not available on this phone or in its language.
- “Couldn’t start listening. Try again.”
- The microphone could not be opened, often because a call or another app has it. Tap the microphone again.
- There is no microphone
- It is hidden while an answer is coming and while you are offline. It comes back when the answer has finished.
- The words stayed in the box and were not sent
- Listening ended by itself, or an answer was still coming. Check the words and send them with the arrow.
