Read the money figures on Home
What each figure on the Home page’s Numbers view means, what it is compared with, and why a tile is green, amber or red.
On this page
The web app’s Home page has two views: Numbers, which is money in and money out, and Floor, which is who is on, the checks and what is waiting. This article is about Numbers. On the iPhone, a short version of today’s figures is at the top of the Hub: see See sales today on the phone.
On the web
Go to Home
- Press Numbers at the top right, if the page opened on Floor. The page remembers which you last used.
- Pick the period: Today, This week, This month or This year. The arrows beside the date step back and forward, and the date itself opens a calendar to pick any run of days.
- Pick the location in the sidebar, or “All locations” to add up every location you build the rota for.
- Read the two columns: Money in and Money out. Use Worst first or Best first to change the order.
Money in
- Sales What the till took, after discounts and without VAT. Voided sales count for nothing. Where the till gave the VAT on every sale, the same sales with VAT on are shown quietly beside the figure as “inc. VAT”, to check against the till’s own report. That figure leaves out service charge and tips. If you set sales targets, the tile also shows the target for the days so far and how much of it has been taken.
- Projected sales Only while part of the period is still to come: what has been taken, plus what the remaining days are likely to take. Each day to come is last year’s same weekday, adjusted by how the last four weeks have gone against the same four weeks last year. If there is no last year for a day, it is the average of the last few of that weekday. It is a guess: it is never coloured.
- Spend per head Sales divided by covers.
- Average check Sales divided by the number of bills.
- Covers Guests, as the till recorded them on each sale. If covers are not entered on the till, this and spend per head have nothing to show.
- Sales per labour hour Sales divided by the hours worked.
- Sales vs last year Appears only when you are comparing with something other than last year, and last year has figures.
Money out
- Wages What the hours clocked cost, with paid holiday. Measured against the wage budget where a day has one, and against the rota’s cost where it has not.
- Labour % Wages as a percentage of sales. It is measured against the location’s labour limit: green at or under the limit, amber up to three points over, red beyond. The limit is the line across the chart above the column.
- Cost of goods What the items sold cost, as a percentage of their sales, using the cost prices on the till. Measured against 100 minus your GP target: green at or under, amber up to three points over.
- Waste What was recorded as wasted, against the same days of the comparison. Less is better.
- Repairs What repairs cost in the period. Shown to people who manage equipment. It has no target and is never coloured.
- Hours Hours worked, against the rota’s hours. Fewer is better.
The colours
Each tile is judged against the figure on the line under it. For sales, covers and spend: green at or above it, amber within a tenth under, red further under. For wages, hours and waste it is the other way up. A tile with nothing to judge it by has no colour and says why in two or three words: No sales yet, No till connected, No covers yet, No last year, Nothing clocked yet, No costs on the till.
Part-way through a day, week or month, a figure is held against the same part of the comparison, and the line says so far.
What “last year” means
A restaurant trades by the weekday, so a day is never compared with the same date a year before. It is compared with the same weekday 52 weeks earlier: Thursday 1 January 2026 against Thursday 2 January 2025. A week is held against the week 52 weeks before, and a month against the same number of days starting from the matching weekday, so both sides have the same number of Fridays and Saturdays.
The cost of that is that fixed dates drift by a day or two: Christmas Day falls on different sides, and Easter moves by weeks. Bank holidays on either side are marked on the page so you can see it.
Choosing what to compare with
The key beside the date shows what the figures are held against. Press it to change:
- Auto Last year, where last year has figures for at least half the days so far. Otherwise it falls back to the stretch before. A location whose till went in eight months ago has no last year yet, so it gets the stretch before without being asked.
- Last year Always the same weekdays 52 weeks before. With no figures then, tiles say No last year.
- The stretch before. Named for the period: A week ago for a day, Last week for a week, 4 weeks ago for a month. Whole weeks back, so the weekdays still line up.
- Custom Any start date you pick. With Same weekdays on, it is moved to the nearest day of the same weekday.
When the comparison reaches only some of the days, the tile says how many, for example “3 of 5 days”. Your choice is remembered for you on that browser.
If it doesn’t work
- There is no Numbers switch, only the Floor view
- Numbers is for people who build the rota at the location picked. With “All locations” picked, it adds up the ones you build it for.
- “Numbers are for whoever builds this location’s rota.”
- You do not hold “Build and edit the rota” at this location.
- “No till connected” on the sales tiles
- Sales come from the till. See Connect a SumUp POS Pro till.
- Sales do not match the till’s report
- Yes Chef’s sales are without VAT, and the till’s headline usually includes it: compare the “inc. VAT” figure. Sales arrive every ten minutes, so the last few minutes may be missing. Voids and refunds entered later are picked up overnight for the last seven days.
- “No costs on the till” on Cost of goods
- No product that sold has a cost price on the till. Add cost prices in the till’s back office.
