Keep a photo or file
Photos, videos, files and voice messages in a chat are deleted after 30 days. Press Keep on the ones worth holding on to.
On this page
Anything attached to a message has a clock under it: how long it has left before it is deleted. It starts at 30 days. Keep stops the clock.
Keep one from the chat
- Find the photo, video, file or voice message in the chat. Under it is how long it has left, such as “27d left”, or “5h left” on its last day.
- Press Keep beside the clock.
- The clock now reads Kept. It will not be deleted.
See everything in a chat, and what is kept
On the web
- Open the chat and press the panel key at the top right (Chat details).
- Press the Media tab. It lists Photos and videos, Voice messages and Files, each with its clock and its Keep key.
- Press Kept at the top to see only what has been kept. All shows everything again.
On the phone
- Open the chat and press the details key at the top right.
- Press Media. It says Deleted after 30 days unless kept, and each item has its clock and its Keep key.
Undo a keep
Press Undo beside Kept. You see it on things you kept yourself. In a team chat or a group, people with the “Create and manage group chats, and remove messages” permission see it on things anyone kept.
Undoing never deletes something on the spot: it gets a fresh 30 days from that moment.
What about the words
The 30 days is for attachments only. Message text is kept for good unless an Admin has set a limit: see Set the messaging rules.
If it doesn’t work
- It says “Kept” but there is no Undo
- Someone else kept it. In a direct chat only they can undo it. In a team chat or a group, a Location Manager or an Admin can.
- It says “Expiring”
- Its 30 days are up and it is about to be deleted. Deleting runs once a day, so Keep may still save it if you press it now.
- “This has already been deleted”
- The file went before you pressed Keep. Ask whoever sent it to send it again.
