Reply, react and mention someone
Answer one message or one photo, add a reaction, and use @ to get a person’s attention or everyone who is on shift.
Reply to a message
- On the web, point at the message and press the arrow beside it (Reply). The box says who you are replying to. Write your answer and send it. Esc cancels.
- On the phone, press and hold the message and choose Reply.
Your message is sent with a quote of the one it answers. Press the quote to jump back to the original, which is lit for a moment.
Reply to one photo
When a message has several photos, you can answer one of them.
- On the web, point at the photo and press the arrow in its corner (Reply to this photo), or open the photo and press Reply.
- On the phone, press and hold the photo and choose Reply to photo, or open the photo and press Reply.
React to a message
There are six reactions: 👍 ❤️ 😂 🎉 👀 ✅.
- On the web, point at the message, press the smiley (React) and pick one.
- On the phone, press and hold the message. The reactions open above it.
Reactions sit under the message with a count. Press one that is already there to add yours to it. Press your own to take it back.
Mention someone
Type @ and the first letters of a name. A list of the people in the chat opens. Pick the person, then finish your message and send it. On the web, the arrow keys move through the list and Enter or Tab picks.
You can also open the chat’s details, press the person’s name and choose Mention. Their name is put in the box for you.
- The person you mention is told in their inbox, and on their phone if notifications are on, even if they have muted the chat.
- Their name is picked out in the message.

If it doesn’t work
- Typing @ shows no list
- The list has only the people in this chat, and it matches from the start of the name. Check the spelling, or check they are in the chat under its details.
- @on shift is not offered
- It exists in team chats only, not in groups or direct chats.
- The quote says a photo has expired
- The photo was deleted after its 30 days. See Keep a photo or file.
