Mute a chat

Stop a busy chat from notifying you, and know what still gets through: broadcasts and messages that mention you.

Who can do this: Everyone. Muting is yours alone: nobody else in the chat is affected or told.

Web and iPhoneChecked

On this page

A new message normally puts a row in your inbox and, if notifications are on, an alert on your phone. Muting a chat stops both for that chat.

On the web

  1. Open the chat under Messages and press the panel key at the top right (Chat details).
  2. Switch on Mute. It says Chat muted.

On the phone

  1. Open the chat in the Messages tab and press the details key at the top right.
  2. Switch on Mute. It says Chat muted.

To hear from the chat again, switch Mute off. It says Chat unmuted.

What a muted chat still does

  • New messages still arrive in the chat, and it still shows how many are unread. On the web the count turns grey and a crossed-out bell sits beside the chat’s name. On the phone the chat’s heading says Muted.
  • Its unread messages are not counted in the number on the app’s icon.

How messages notify you when a chat is not muted

  • Your inbox holds one row for each chat, however many messages are waiting in it. It is marked read when you open the chat.
  • On the phone, the first unread message in a chat makes a sound. The ones that follow before you open it arrive quietly.
  • Opening a chat marks everything in it as read.

If a team chat is noisy for everyone, a manager can make it announcements only: see Manage a group chat.

If it doesn’t work

A muted chat still alerted you
It was a broadcast, or someone mentioned you. Those are not stopped by muting.
You get no alerts on the phone from any chat
Notifications for Yes Chef are off on the iPhone. Turn them on in the iPhone’s Settings, under Yes Chef.
