Move a task to another list

Carry a task along its board, from To do to Doing to Done, by dragging on the web or from a sheet on the iPhone.

Who can do this: Anyone who can open the task: everyone who can see its board, and anyone assigned to it.

On this page

A board’s lists are the stages a job goes through. A new board has To do, Doing and Done. Moving a task is how you show where it has got to. A task stays on its own board: it cannot be moved to a different board.

On the web

Go to Tasks, then Boards

  1. Open the board. Its lists stand side by side.
  2. Drag the card to the list you want and let go where it should sit. The other cards make room as you pass.
  3. It says Moved to with the list’s name.

Dragging a card up or down inside its own list changes the order, and says nothing. If you have the task open, you can also choose its list under List in the panel.

On the phone

Nothing is dragged on the phone. A board shows one list at a time.

  1. Open Me, then Tasks, and open the board.
  2. Press and hold the card. A sheet headed Move to opens.
  3. Press the list. It says Moved to with the list’s name.

From inside a task, press its List row for the same sheet. A moved task goes to the foot of the list. Changing the order within a list is done on the web.

What happens next

The move is written in the task’s log with your name. Nobody is sent a notice about a move, unless it is into a done list.

Done tasks in a list stand newest first, below the open ones, and cannot be reordered. To choose which lists a board has, see Set up the lists on a board.

If it doesn’t work

The card opens instead of moving
A press that does not travel is read as a click. Hold the card and move it before letting go.
“That list has been archived”
Someone archived the list while you were moving the card. Choose another list.
“No room left there. Put it at the top or the foot of the list.”
The spot between those two cards cannot be used at the moment. Drop the card at the top or the foot of the list, then move it again.
