Design a printed menu

Lay one of your menus out for paper or a screen: pick a style, adjust it, and export it as a PDF, an image or straight to a printer.

Who can do this: Making and changing a design takes the “Edit menus and items” permission: Admins and Location Managers by default; a Supervisor or an Employee can be given it. Anyone at the location can open a design and export it.

A printed menu is a design made from one of your menus. The dishes, descriptions and prices come from the menu itself, so the design follows the menu when a price changes. It is done on the web. Yes Chef makes the file; printing it is up to you or your printer.

On the web

Go to Menu, then Printed menus

  1. Press New printed menu. With no designs saved yet, the page opens straight on the styles. From the Menu page, Print this menu brings you to the same place.
  2. If the location has more than one menu, press the one to print. Each shows how many dishes it has.
  3. Under Pick a style, press a style. Each one is drawn with your own menu. It says Design made and opens the editor.
  4. Work down the tabs on the left. The page on the right is the real menu, redrawn as you change it.
    • Style: the style, and under Fine-tune its lettering and colours.
    • Dishes: the sections and the dishes in each. Move them, hide one, or change how one is written on this design.
    • Offers: a price off, shown on the menu.
    • Page: the sheet (paper to print, or a size for a screen), which way up, columns, lettering size, spacing and margin.
    • Details: the head of the menu, a logo, what is printed on each dish (descriptions, tags, add-ons, allergens), the foot, and a QR code.
  5. Press Export and choose PDF for a printer, PNG image or JPG image for a screen or social media, or Print to send it to a printer from this computer. For a file, Print · 300 dpi is the sharper of the two qualities.

The file downloads and it says Menu ready. Changes are saved a moment after you make them, and the arrows at the top undo and redo. Type over the name at the top to rename the design.

Your saved designs

Printed menus lists every design at the location. Click one to open it. The menu on each card has Rename, Duplicate and Delete. A copy is a quick way to make a second version, such as a lunch menu, from the first.

If it doesn’t work

“No menu to print yet”
The location has no menu. Press Go to Menu and add one, or start from the menu you print today.
The menu “has no dishes yet”
The menu you picked is empty. Press Add dishes in Menu.
The editor says “View only”, or the styles cannot be pressed
You can look at and export designs but not change them. That takes the “Edit menus and items” permission at this location.
“This printed menu isn’t here any more”
The design was deleted, or the menu it was made from was. Go back to Printed menus.
“The logo must be an image” or “The logo must be 2 MB or smaller”
Use a PNG or JPG of the logo, 2 MB at most.
“Couldn’t export the menu”
The file could not be made in this browser. Try again, or choose the Standard · 150 dpi quality, which makes a smaller file.
