Import recipes from a file

Turn a PDF or photos of your recipe sheets into recipes in the book, checking what was read before anything is saved.

Who can do this: Admins and Location Managers by default (the “Edit menus and items” permission); a Supervisor or an Employee can be given it.

WebChecked

On this page

If your recipes are already written down, Yes Chef can read them from a file instead of you typing each one. It is done on the web.

On the web

Go to Menu, then Recipes

  1. Press From a file.
  2. Choose the files: a PDF, or photos of the pages. You can choose up to eight at once.
  3. Wait while it says Getting it ready, Uploading and Reading the recipes. Reading can take a minute. Cancel stops it.
  4. A list opens, headed with how many recipes were read. Each row has the recipe’s name and what was found: its stages, ingredients, hands-on and waiting time.
  5. Check each one. Press the arrow on a row to see the ingredients and stages as they were read. Type over a name to correct it, and untick any recipe you do not want.
  6. Press the Add button at the foot, which says how many recipes it will add. It says the recipes were added, and they are in the book.

What happens next

The new recipes are in the book like any other, and can be added to the prep list. Closing the list without pressing Add saves nothing.

If it doesn’t work

“PDF or a picture”
The file is another kind, such as a Word document or a spreadsheet. Save it as a PDF, or photograph the pages.
“That’s too many pages — 8 at most”
Choose eight files or fewer, and import the rest in another go.
“That file is too big — 15 MB at most” or “Those files are too big together — 18 MB at most”
Send fewer files at once, or a smaller PDF.
“That took too long to read. Try fewer pages” or “That’s too much to read in one go. Try fewer pages”
Import a few pages at a time.
“Couldn’t find a recipe on that”
Nothing on the pages read as a recipe. Check the photo is sharp, well lit and the right way up.
“There’s no recipe in that to save” or the Add button is greyed out
Every recipe is unticked, or a ticked one has no name.
“A location has 300 recipes at most. Archive some first”
The book would be over its limit. Archive recipes you no longer use, or untick some.
“Reading recipes isn’t set up on this deployment”
Reading files is not switched on for your Yes Chef. Write to omar@1273.co.uk.
