Add a menu, its categories and its items

Build a menu in Yes Chef: make the menu, add its categories, then add each dish with its price.

Who can do this: Admins and Location Managers by default (the “Edit menus and items” permission); a Supervisor or an Employee can be given it. Anyone at the location can read the menu on the web.

On this page

A menu holds categories, and a category holds items. So the order is always the same: the menu first, then at least one category, then the dishes. Each location has its own menus, and can have several.

On the web

Go to Menu, then Menu

  1. Pick the location. At the top of the page, type the menu’s name into New menu name and press the plus beside it. It says Menu created, and the new menu is picked.
  2. Under Categories, press New category. Give it a Name (Starters, Mains, Sides) and press Add. It says Category added. Add the rest the same way.
  3. Under Items, press New item. The button is greyed out until the menu has a category.
  4. Fill in the Name, choose the Category, and type the Price (£).
  5. Add what else you want kept with the dish:
    • Description (optional): the line under the dish’s name. A printed menu can show it.
    • Aliases (comma-separated): other names your team uses for it.
    • Allergens (comma-separated): see Record allergens.
    • Modifiers: press + Add modifier for each. A Remove is free; an Add has a price.
  6. Press Add. It says Item added and the dish is in the Items table.

Sort order on a category or an item is a number: lower numbers come first in the lists. The forms also have Tier, Counts as upsell and Attach-rate base; you can leave them as they are.

On the phone

On the phone, menus are on the Hub, the home screen of managers and supervisors: under More, press Menus.

  1. Under New menu, type the name and press Create. It says Menu created.
  2. Tap the menu to open it, and press Category at the top. Give it a name and press Add category.
  3. Under the category, press Add item. Fill in Name and Price (£), check the Category, and press Add item. It says Item added.

What happens next

A new menu starts switched off. When it is ready, switch it on. From the web you can also press Print this menu to lay it out for paper.

If it doesn’t work

“Pick a location to manage its menu.”
The web is on all locations. Pick one location at the top of the sidebar.
There is no New category or New item button
You can read the menu but not change it. Changing it takes the “Edit menus and items” permission at this location.
“Enter a valid price”
The price is empty or is not a number. Type it in pounds, such as 12.50.
“Category not in this location”
The category was archived while the form was open. Close the form and pick another category.
On the phone: “Check the form”
The item needs a name and a price.
