Start a printed menu from your current menu

Hand Yes Chef the menu you print today as a PDF, a Word file or a photo, and get a design laid out to match, and a menu in the app if you have none.

Who can do this: Admins and Location Managers by default (the “Edit menus and items” permission); a Supervisor or an Employee can be given it.

If you already have a printed menu, you do not have to start from a blank style. Yes Chef reads the file and lays out a design that shows what the file shows. For a location with no menu in the app yet, it is also a way to get the first one. It is done on the web.

On the web

Go to Menu, then Printed menus

  1. Press New printed menu if the styles are not already showing.
  2. Click the dashed box that says Start from your current menu, or drag the file onto it. It takes a PDF, a Word file or photos, up to six files at once.
  3. Wait while it says Getting it ready, Uploading and Reading your menu. This can take a minute. Cancel stops it.
  4. A box opens with your file on the left, under Yours, and the design on the right, under Ours. Compare the two. The figures count the Sections and Dishes that were read.
  5. Under Print from, choose where the dishes come from:
    • One of your menus. Each shows how many of the file’s dishes it already has. Dishes found on it count under On the menu; the rest count under New.
    • New menu, with a name. The menu, its categories and its dishes are made from the file.
  6. If you chose an existing menu and some prices differ from the file, choose under Prices: Menu’s prints the prices in the app; File’s prints the file’s figure, on this design only.
  7. Check the Design name and press Make design. It says Design made and opens the editor.

What happens next

You are in the editor, where the design is changed and exported like any other. See Design a printed menu. Nothing is saved until you press Make design: closing the box before then leaves no trace, and the file you uploaded is not kept.

If it doesn’t work

“PDF, Word or a picture”
The file is another kind. Save it as a PDF, or photograph the menu.
“That’s too many files — 6 at most”
Choose six files or fewer.
“That file is too big — 15 MB at most” or “Those files are too big together — 18 MB at most”
Send a smaller PDF, or fewer photos.
“That menu is too long to read in one go. Try it a page at a time” or “That took too long to read. Try fewer pages”
Import the menu a page at a time.
“Couldn’t find a menu in that file”
Nothing in it read as a menu. Check the photo is sharp, well lit and the right way up.
There is no dashed box
You can look at designs but not make them. That takes the “Edit menus and items” permission at this location.
“Reading a menu isn’t set up on this deployment”
Reading files is not switched on for your Yes Chef. Write to omar@1273.co.uk.
