Tick off the prep list

Start a prep item, work a recipe one stage at a time, let it wait, and mark it done, on the iPhone or the web.

Who can do this: Everyone by default (the “See the prep list and recipes, add to the list and tick things off” permission).

Web and iPhoneChecked

On this page

There are two kinds of row. A plain line (“slice lemons”) is started and ticked off. A row made from a recipe carries the recipe’s stages, and is worked one stage at a time.

What the words on a row mean

  • A name and “Stage 2 of 4” at the head of a row: that person has started it, and that is where it stands.
  • On the go: the last stage ticked is looking after itself (simmering, chilling). These are held above the list with the time left.
  • Ready: the wait is over and nobody has picked it up. It goes to the top of the list, in amber.
  • Urgent: someone marked it.
  • Start first: the app’s suggestion for what to put on first, because it has waiting in it.

On the phone

  1. Open Me, then Prep list. The strip at the top counts To do, On the go and Done today.
  2. For a plain line, press the tick at the end of its row. It says Prep done and the row folds away.
  3. For a recipe, tap the row. It opens one stage to a screen, in large type. Press Start.
  4. When the stage is finished, press Done, next. If that stage then waits, the screen becomes its countdown, with what comes next underneath. You can leave the screen: the row sits under On the go on the list.
  5. When the wait is over the screen says Ready. Press Pick up and carry on. To get on with the next stage while the wait is still running, press Carry on.
  6. On the last stage, press Done. It says Prep done and takes you back to the list.

Pressed the wrong thing: Back a stage un-ticks the last stage, and Not started puts back something you started by mistake. The arrows either side of “Stage 2 of 5” look ahead or back without ticking anything, and Ingredients shows what goes in.

To change an item, open it and press the pencil at the top: its name, how much, Needed by and Urgent, then Save. Take off removes it from the list.

On the web

Go to Menu, then Prep list

  1. Each row under To do ends in the one thing to do to it next: Start, then Stage done for each stage, then Done.
  2. Click a row to open it at the side. Method lists every stage, with the done ones ticked and the one in hand marked; Ingredients and Details are beside it. The same keys are at the top, with Back a stage and Not started.
  3. In Details you can change How much, Needed by, Who and Urgent. There is no save button: each change is kept as you make it. Take off removes the item.
  4. To finish or remove several, tick their rows and press Done or Take off in the bar that appears.

Who is on what

Once anyone has started something, their name is at the top of the list with how many things they have started. Press a name to see only theirs; on the web, press Everyone to go back.

What happens next

A finished item leaves the list and is counted in Done today. Nothing finishes by the clock alone: when a wait ends, the item comes Ready and waits for someone to say it is done. If you threw some of it away, the Waste key at the top of the phone’s prep list opens Record waste.

If something was ticked off by mistake, add it to the list again: once an item is done its screen closes.

If it doesn’t work

“Recipe changed” or “Recipe changed since this was started”
The item keeps its own copy of the stages from when it was added. Someone has edited the recipe since. Finish it from the stages shown, or take it off and add it again.
“Not on the list”
Someone else finished it or took it off while you had it open.
“No prep list here”
You do not have the prep permission at the location the phone is on, or Prep is switched off there.
A row has no tick on the phone
It is a recipe, so it has an arrow instead. Open it and work through its stages. To finish it without ticking every stage, open it on the web and press Done.
