Set up a kitchen wall screen
Put the prep list, the day’s checks, open tasks and who is on shift on a TV or an iPad in the kitchen, with no sign-in on the screen.
A wall screen is any TV, tablet or computer with a web browser, showing what is not done yet at one location. It is read from across the room and never touched. Nobody signs in on it: the screen shows a code, and you tell Yes Chef where it hangs by typing that code on the web.
On the web
Go to Settings, then Screens
- On your own computer or phone’s browser, go to Settings, then Screens, with the location picked. The box labelled On the screen shows the address the screen has to open: the address of your Yes Chef, ending in /wall.
- On the screen itself, open that address in its browser. It shows a six-character Screen code.
- Back on Screens, under Add a screen, type the code into Screen code.
- Give it a Name that says where it is, such as “Kitchen” or “Pass”.
- Press Add screen. It says Screen added, and within a few seconds the screen changes from the code to the location’s board.
What the screen shows
- Prep: the prep list, in the order the location is on, with who is on each thing and the stage it is at. Anything looking after itself is held at the top under On the go with its time left.
- Checks: the day’s checks that are not done, with how long each is open, or Overdue or Missed.
- Tasks: open tasks from boards that are for everyone.
- On now and Due in: first names of who is working and who is due, from the published rota.
- The location’s name, the date, the time, and the day’s note if one has been written.
A part with nothing in it is not drawn, and the rest takes the room. When a thing is done it leaves the screen; with nothing left it says All done. A list too long for the screen turns its own pages.
Rename or end a screen
On Screens, each screen is listed with the day it was added and by whom. The pencil renames it. The bin, then End screen, disconnects it: it says Screen ended, and the screen goes back to showing a code. A location can have ten screens.
If it doesn’t work
- “No screen is showing that code”
- The code was mistyped, or it has run out: a code is good for half an hour. Read the code that is on the screen now and type it again.
- “A location has 10 screens at most”
- End a screen you no longer use.
- The screen says Offline
- It has lost its connection and is showing the last board it read. It carries on by itself when the connection is back.
- The screen has gone back to a code
- Someone ended it, or the browser’s stored data was cleared, which makes it a new screen. Add it again with the code it shows.
- The screen goes dark or to a screensaver
- The page asks the browser to keep the screen lit, but some TVs and low-battery tablets refuse. Turn off sleep in the device’s own settings.
- Screens is not in the sidebar
- The sidebar is on all locations, you do not have the permission, or the Prep part of the app is switched off at this location.
